At the beginning, I asked that we place ourselves in the shoes of Jeremiah. So, you will see compare and contrast Jeremiah’s day with our day to help us see that we wear the same size of shoe so to speak.

  1. 7:1 – 8:3 – What faults did Jeremiah find with the false worship of his day? Compare and contrast your answer to the same question: in the body of Christ in worship today.
  2. 7 : 9 -11 – When the people committed sins and then went to God’s house to worship Him , how was that different from trusting God to forgive our sins by His grace?
  3. 8: 4-22 – Compare and contrast the peoples complacency with having the Word of God with today.
  4. Jeremiah 9 – How were the people misusing their covenant relationship with God?
  5. Jeremiah 10 – How did Jeremiah respond to the false gods the people worshipped.? How about our preachers today?
  6. Idolatry involves “the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him.” Give some expamples of such thoughts that are common today.
  7. Why were people so unwilling to change their offensive worhips habits even after Jeremiah’s prophecy of the coming captivity?
  8. Jeremiah was a prophet, not a priest. Who are our prophets today? Segregate them between false prophets and your mentors to His truth.
  9. Wiersbe asserts that “the tragedy for idolatry is for us to get caught up in the majesty and grandeur of God, the true God, the living God, the everlasting King.” How can you practice that truth today?
  10. Read Jeremiah 11. Why did God remind the people of His covenant with them?
  11. What was the consequence Jeremiah faced because he stood with God?

for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move.

Some people use these verses on idolatry to claim that Christmas and Christmas trees in particular are idol worship. J Vernon McGee spoke on these verses saying in essence that if you are worshipping the tree then yes that’s a problem. But if you are worshipping the Lord and the tree is just a decoration than its not.

I’ve listened to the first five sermons in Skip Heitzig 2004 series on Jeremiah. These cover chapters 1-10. I’ve been amazed at how he is able to relate Jeremiah to the teachings of Jesus and other familiar new testament passages. Shows the Bible is whole and interprets itself.

I came across another good resource on Thru The Bible with J Vernon McGee. Not only can you obtain his entire five year thru the Bible teaching including Jeremiah. But yiu can also download for free a PDF with an outline of each book.

“Therefore do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, for I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble.
    Jeremiah 11:14 ESV

Wow! God saying he will not hear prayers for Israel. And tells Jere.iah not to pray for them either. Hearts so hard their destiny of excitement is already set. Pray that none we know reach this point of no return that they could not turn back to God and be saved.
