Praying the Bible – Day 1

I recently read (if you know me, you know that “read” means listened to the audiobook) the book “Praying the Bible” by Don Whitney. The book is short, succinct and practical in the way that it presents a method of prayer so that prayer is not boring and avoids praying “the same old things about the same old things”. I found on YouTube a five part video series about five minutes each of the author giving an overview of his approach to prayer – Praying the Bible. I hope you’ll take five minutes to listen and be encouraged – to pray the Bible.

In this part 1, Whitney introduces the method and then provides an example by praying through the 23rd Psalm. Be prepared for homework as he will invite you to spend 5-7 minutes praying Psalm 23!

How did it go? Did you pray Psalm 23? Sign in and comment!

Psalm 23 is one of my 24 bible verses. I grew up with it but I couldn’t recite it when I first going through these verses daily. Psalm 145 is another one of 24 but it takes up 6 3×5 index cards . I recite this one nightly and it is a great example of Whitney’s “praying the bible”.
Take our common prayer acronyn: “ACTS” – Adoration / Confession / Thanksgiving / and SUPPLICATION . For Adoration, the opening is great, critics would say : “It is rote”, but anything but. I was having trouble coming up with words; it makes sense. I probably won’t adapt his example here of interjecting “supplication” prayer before praying through it in its entirety. If my heart runs dry, I may change that , but it hasn’t in a about a year. But I can really see the benefit of branching off Psalm bases for the “C” and the “T”.
    Thanks Carl!
