01/02/2025 – Day 193 – Psalm – Chapters 81 – 83 / Psalm 83 categorization (3) explained: “LNM” , or Lament; National; Imprecatory.
The “Apologetics Study Bible” comments on Psalm 83:
“This is the last psalm in the 42-psalms. “Eulogistic Psalter” (Pss 42 – 83) in which the title ‘God’ often appears where one would expect the divine Yahweh. Various theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, but there is no consensus regarding why it occurs.”
“Halley’s Bible Handbook” summarizes as follows: “A Prayer for Protection” – “From a Conspiracy of Federated nations: Edomites, Arabians, Moabites, Ammonites, Amalekites, Philistines, and others.”
Could not this apply to modern day Israel as well?
Comment: The three categories – “LNM” for this Psalm:
“L” – Lament meaning “deep sorrow, grief, or regret” / “N” – National as in the nation of Israel as opposed to “I” – Individual / “M” – “Imprecatory”, meaning : “to invoke a curse on someone.”
Jimmy comment:
Many people respond to all the evil in the Bible with the misconception that the LORD condones it. A prime example was our reading the reading this past Wednesday, Day 192 – 2 Kings 6 – 10.That is how we get a dualism – An evil god in the Old Testament vs. a loving God in the New Testament. I submit one could categorize a “LNM” psalm as a “whining” psalm but yet inclusive with all psalms that are essentially God prayers. But within the context of all of the book of Psalm, I think these psalms are God prayers as well, or from the hand of God. It might be as if God is saying: “I hear you, just trust and obey!” We win in the end by His grace!
