The Practice of Weaning

Thursday, January 11, 2024

Psalm 131:2 says, “I have quieted my soul as a weaned child.” A weaned child is finished with its mother’s milk and not crying for it anymore. So in order to receive from God, you have to wean your soul. When you first take a child away from its mother’s milk, it cries, but then becomes weaned and at peace. It’s the same way with us and the world; we tend to get attached to it and have to wean ourselves from it. You need to take time away from the noise- radio, internet, business, chores, and even from doing things for the Lord- just to be in His presence, to quiet your soul so you can rest and receive from Him. The more time you spend in God’s presence, the more weaned you’ll be from the temptations of this world- what people think of you, the lusts, the dependencies, the emotional ups and downs– and you’ll be blessed. Turn off the distractions, stop dwelling on issues, and draw near to the presence of the Lord. Be quiet, be at peace, and be blessed- just like a weaned child.

From Message #713 – Secrets of the Quiet
Scripture: Colossians 3:1-2

TODAY’S MISSION – Take time today to practice weaning your soul, your desires, your mind, your heart from distractions and attachments. Spend time in His presence and receive from Him.

Insert:

“Lord my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I do not get involved with things too great or too difficult for me. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself like a little weaned child with its mother; I am like a little child. Israel, put your hope in the Lord, both now and forever.” Psalm 131

Connecting scripture (All of God’s Truth Integrates like a glove!) – not shown in this daily devotional:

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Who is greatest the kingdom of heaven?’

Then he called a child to Him and had him stand among them. I assure you,’ He said, ‘unless you are converted and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child — this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one child like this in My name welcomes Me.’ ” Matthew 18: 1-5

And our concluding scripture in this devotional:

The Life of the New Man:

“So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. When the Messiah , who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

Therefore , put to death whatever in you is worldly,: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, God’s wrath comes on the disobedient, and you once walked in theses things when you were living in them. But now you must also put away all the following age, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his practices and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of His Creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave; but Christ is all and in all.” (*A below)

(*A below) – From my Apologetics Study Bible, let’s look at that last phrase – “but Christ is all and in all” – Twisted Scripture by some:

“Groups such as Union Life, which hold to a pantheistic worldview, believe that everything in existence is a form or manifestation of God’s essence, although God is more than the sum total of creation. Hence, they look to this verse for scriptural support. The verse, however, actually teaches that Christ is everything to a believer and indwells each one.” (note – our indwelling Holy Spirit. And note!: God is both immanent (pantheism and christian) and transcendent (more than the sum of total creation – christian view)
