Not to preclude the other 4 ways, but let’s just look at #2 here from a Christian worldview perspective:
“Compare all the unearned good things that have happened in your life with all the unearned bad things that have happened in your life.”
- God created me.
- I was saved from my sin, through Yeshua’s substitutionary atonement of my sins on the cross & his resurrection. The only thing I contributed to my salvation, and eternity in heaven was the sin that made Yeshua’s sacrifice necessary to save my life. So, unfathomable “joy” is 100% unearned.
- Let me just quote St. Teresa of Avila on this last point. She wrote at the end of her life: “From the standpoint of heaven, the most miserable life that has been, or ever will be lived is like a single night in a bad hotel.” Actually, she overstated it: If I live 50 more years, 50 divided by eternity from the point of my departure from this life is mathematically the limit -0-. If I were to live a million years, you get the same result.
So, by logical extension, the entirety of my unearned bad stuff, past, present and future is -0- relative to my unearned good stuff.
So, a transformational tool here? I say yes, for attitude makes a tremendous difference for areas under our control, through prayer, determination, and perseverance.
SolI Deo Gloria!
