03/09/2021 – Day 296 – Deuteronomy 4 – 6 // “I believe the reason why so few find Christ is that they do not search for Him with all their hearts; they are not terribly in earnest about their soul’s salvation.” D.L. Moody
6:4 – The Jewish “Shema”: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” Jesus quoted this verse to the rich young ruler, who asked Him what is the greatest commandment.
And now, let’s explore what is right behind the “greatest commandment” verses 6 through 9:
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your had, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your hose and on your gates.”
So, is it any wonder that America lost it’s story, God’s story. Not only is this command not practiced in the Christian community, but we have turned over our schools to the pagan gulag , so they can preach the devil’s story , all under the illogical pretense of separation of church and state. It is impossible to separate the two, for everyone has a religion , a lens by which they view the world. So, it all comes down to whose story is it? Notice the key question in 6:20 near the close of today’s reading: “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord our God has commanded you?’
Emphasis?:
4: 10: “…Gather, the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.”
4:24: “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jeolous God.”
4:36: “Out of heaven He let you hear his voice, that He might instruct you, on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire.”
5:26: “For who is there of all flesh who has heard the vvoice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?”
My Bible contains nearly 2,000 pages with footnotes. But if it had to be condensed down to say less than 100 pages, I would be hard-pressed, or perhaps “remiss” is a better word, to not include the six pages here in Deuteronomy 4 through 6. Chapter five gives us a review of the ten commandments.
Look at the footnote of 6: 5-9 verses I just quoted : “This is a direct reference to the Ten Commandments (see 5: 6-21). Teach your children the moral Law – not to improve their memory or to help them win an Awana contest, but to awaken their conscience and prepare the soil of their hearts for the life-giving seed of the gospel. Do it throughout your day, from the time you get up to the time you go to bed. This will instill in your children the knowledge of sin. (See Romans 3:19,20; 7: 7 – 13), teaching them that it is wrong to disobey, lie, steal, covet, etc. The purpose of God’s Law is to teach them the holiness of God, to show them their need for the Savior and bring them to the foot of a blood-stained cross (see Galations 3:2). No wonder the enemy hates God’s Law. See Proverbs 22:6 comment.
Soli Deo Gloria indeed!
