05/07/2023 – “The Tell” chapter 1 Fellowship discussion / Notes
I put my own questions over the chapter in bold amidst my notes on the chapter. I compiled the notes within my Apple notes file and then copied it over to the post. It is not quite seamless. haha, but you get what you pay for.
“The Tell” Chapter 1:
During his lifetime, it was reported that James Michener did not enjoy “small talk”. I did not remember in my first reading many years
Ago, Michener’s romantic “diversions” between Dr. Cullinane and Dr. Vered, with Dr. Vered spurning his attraction to her.
– pg 25 – The six branch golden menorah:

Note – includes reference to Josephus.
Pg. 34 – Note how the Jews working on the dig were so fascinated by stone representation of the flat
Wage bearing the wooden Ark of the Covenant in which the tablets of the Ten Commandments., to the point of having
Tears in their eyes! On on pg. #35, how quickly the priority of the two trenches being dug changed in a flash, given
The early discoveries, or lack thereof.
Pg. 39 – Cullinane goes back to his school day memories in Gary, Indiana for some soul searching, why were he and his Friends so angry at the Jews, past the point of anti-semitism? And here he was contemplating marrying a Jew. As Dennis Prayer, points out,
How amazing that the covenant people were so small, yet ran into so much targeted persecution throughout history, yet their culture has survived.
Can it be anything but the Devil and his minions, ongoing spiritual warfare from the beginning? And God’s love, providence and sovereignty in the end.
Pg25 reference: “He (Cullinane) pushed it away, unaware that it was to become the most notorious single object
That would be found at the dig.” What is this?; Are we just to stay tuned to future chapters?
Regarding pg. 30 and elsewhere, reference to “Wenzel of Trier’s Chronicle”

Take note -pg 35 – of the discovery of the the Roman coins and how it emotionally affected the modern Jewish Discovers, as noted: “this flawless union of imperial force and tribute sorrow (destruction of their temple), and it fascinated the modern Jews whose history it summarized.”
Pg 52 – Re: Orde Wingate Forest – learn about General Orde Wingate, the brilliant eccentric that loved the nation of
Israel.
-pg 57 – bottom – learn about Zefat – one of four holy cities in Israel:
Town of zefat – Tell chapter:

Pg. #66: An amazing fact if true!: “We kibbutzniks represent only about four per cent of the total population of Israel.
But we have supplied about fifty per cent of the national leadership. In all fields. Because we grew up with honest ideals.
Solid underpinning.”
Pg #67: “the tell contained seventy-one feet of accumulation laid down during eleven thousand years, and that meant less
Eight inches per century.” Interesting metric…
Pg #68:
Carbon-14 and more recently potassium argon dating both have scientifically documented issues:
Inaccuracies in radiocarbon dating: Note – The calibration curve varies by region.
Concluding paragraph:
“Our work,” he added, “should prompt a round of revisions and rethinking for the timeline of the archaeology and early history of the southern Levant through the early Biblical period.”
