08/02/2024 – Day 061 – Job – Chapters 17 & 18 / “Hope that is seen is not hope.” Romans 8: 24 – 25; 2 Corinthians 4:18; and, Hebrews 11:1
A prior cycle post, dated 04/29/22 ties into the post here from a different verse, asking the question: “Is Job waffling in his faith here?”
“Where then is my hope? As for my hope who can see it? Will they go down to the gates of Sheol? Shall we have rest together in the dust?” Job 17: 15-16
Let’s look at the commentary from “The Evidence Study Bible”:
“Without Jesus of Nazareth, none of us have any hope. If He was not who He said He was, we are still in our sins and hell awaits us. Never doubt the promises of God, even for a moment. He who does so cuts gapping holes in his own parachute.”
And I would really encourage y’all to take a look at John Gill’s free bible commentary on the web (every verse in the Bible). Just hit the arrow key over to verse 16 after you read the attached link of verse 15:

Now in Chapter 18, we have the 2nd speech of Bildad:
“How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding , and afterward we will speak. ” Job 17:15
And the commentary for this verse, same source:
“18:2. It would be easy to counsel Daniel from the top of the lion’s den. Such speech was rebuked by God Himself. See Job 42:7″
Thoughts? / Reflections?
Questions for fellowship generation, the lifelong sanctification process. Here is a suggested list amongst endless possibilities:
- What does the text reveal about God’s character?
- How has this reading generated prayer for you and/or us?
- What themes stand out to you in this bible study?
- How does our reading fit into the bigger picture (creation, the fall, restoration, etc.)?
- What verse(s) jumped out at you like never before? Is it explainable at this point?
- Do you have any questions you would like to put before the group as to how to interpret any particular verse(s) in our reading. Let scripture testify to scripture: Share with us where you sense contradiction between passages elsewhere.
- What did you find convicting and inspiring at the same time? Share with us how the Spirit of God is working within you as a messenger, both within and outside of our fellowship group.
- Share with the group how our study is calling or confirming to you a new mission to glorify God in our times.
Soli Deo Gloria!
