09/21/2020 – Day 120 – Mark 15 – 16 Synoptic Gospel accounts of Jesus before Pilate //Pilate asks Jesus: “What is truth?”

“When you speak of God or His attributes, let it be seriously and with reverence.” George Washington

Here are the Synpotic Gospel accounts of Jesus before Pilate (verses include Jesus before the chief priests):

Matthew 27:11 – 27:26 / Mark 15:1 – 15:15 / Luke 22:16 – 23:23/John 18:19 – 19:16

Mark’s account , our reading today, is the shortest at 15 verses and John’s account at 38 verses is the longest. How did I get here? I was thinking again about previous Bible studies and Pilate asking Jesus before he walked away: “What is truth?” Isn’t that eerie? Here he had the sole person in all of human history that embodied “truth”, standing right before him and he was asking him “what is truth?” And he was walking away from the Truth! Check me on this, but I think this is the only Synoptic Gospel with this parting question.

It occurs to me that in least some ways, Pilate is ahead of many modern day pagans (future Christians), who don’t even acknowledge absolute truth. I recall a beloved colleague Laura, a Baylor alumnus, who her voice at me in reply to my witness that dates back more than fifteen years :
“Jim , there is no such thing as absolute truth!” To which I replied with : “Laura, it seems to me as if you have just declared an absolute truth.” Nice memory, as I am going to pray for her once again right after closing this post.

Always connected by His grace!
