12/03/2024 – Day 163 – Leviticus – Chapters 1 – 3 / Comment from Leviticus 1: 1-4 and 16: 30-34 : “Jewish atonement today”
This commentary is from “The Evidence Bible – NKVJ”:
“16: 30-34 Jewish atonement today. Modern Jews have abandoned blood sacrifice, and instead observe one day each year of self examination and affliction of the soul, to atone for the sins of the past year: ‘Yom Kippur atones only for sins between man and G-d (*A – comment below), not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first seek reconciliation with that person, righting the wrongs you committed against them if possible. That must all be done before Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is a complete Sabbath; no work can be performed on that day. It is well-known that you are supposed to refrain from eating and drinking (even water) on Yom Kippur. It is a complete, 25-hour fast beginning before sunset on the evening before Yom Kippur and ending after nightfall on the day of Yom Kippur. The Talmud also specifies additional restrictions that are less well-known: washing and bathing, anointing one’s body (with cosmetics, deodorants, etc), wearing leather shoes (Orthodox Jews routinely wear canvas sneakers under their dress clothes on Yom Kippur), and engaging in sexual relations are all prohibited on Yom Kippur.” ‘Yom Kippur,’ Jewish Virtual Library

I am thinking this is just one more example of man’s legalism to the extreme. I would submit that “God” is not the name of God the Father, “The Great I AM”. In prayers, I oftentimes use “El Shaddai”. (look up “names for God the Father in the Bible”)

I don’t have my sources, but here is a list of names for God the Father in my notes:
Avinu Malkeinu – “Our Father, Our King” Sung between Rosh Hashanah (New Year) and Yom Kippur – 10 days of repentance

El Shaddai – God Almighty – known by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
Elohim – complex unity – omnipotent creator
Jehovah Tsidekenu
El Elyon – God most high

In Judaism, the seven names of God that are considered so holy they should not be erased once written are:
- YHWH (Yahweh)
- El
- Elohim
- Eloah
- Elohai
- El Shaddai
- Tzevaot
