07/05/2024 – Day 033 – Job – Chapters 9 & 10
Ok, sometimes it is good to start with lay-ups:
I submit that Job hits a resounding profound chord with this question!:
“For He (God Almighty!) is not a man, as I am, That I may answer Him, And that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, Who may lay hand on us both.” Job 9: 32-33
So, if you want to go to 04/01/2022 , our previous post on this verse and our lay-up question: Who might that mediator be?
From there, I want to share my footnote commentary in “The Evidence Bible”:
9:33 “Job longed for a mediator to state his case in court before the Judge. God would later send one for humanity: ‘There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus (see 1 Timothy 2:5,6). See also 33: 23-28 comment.”
And here is that comment to 33: 23 -28: “Here is the plan of salvation. God provided a Mediator to show man God’s uprightness, to provide a ransom, to redeem our souls and save us from hell…”
And look at 10:4, job asking God: “Do you have eyes of flesh? Or do You see as man sees?”
Which, as you can guess, leads to this rather obvious comment on 10:4 in “The Evidence Bible”:
“Little did Job realize that one day this would happen: God would become flesh and dwell among us. See 1 Timothy 3:16“
And check out the opening of Hebrews, “God’s Supreme Revelation”:
“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers of the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty of hand…” Hebrews 1: 1 -3
And I looked up John Gill’s commentary to zero in on 9: 32-33 initially , but keep in mind, both John Gill’s commentary and Matthew Henry’s commentary is completely free online. John Gill has specific commentary on every single verse of the Bible. Just think about this: He compiled this in the midst of all of his pastoral duties over his church flock in 18th century England. Aim high!
Note – Personally, I have to work a little bit more from both the Gill and Matthew Henry commentaries, for in general, our minds have dimmed from three centuries past, but I am resolved to be a lifetime learner, so I am in school until my last breath! This is much like an impactful story I have shared, while in college, an accounting major, reading in freshmen Political Science: “The Federalist Papers” by Madison, Jay and Hamilton. I couldn’t put it down. I still recall asking myself: “Who were these guys!” Answer many years later: Brought up in a Christian worldview environment… It ratchets you up considerably in a quest for knowledge and wisdom… Is “The Federalist Papers” still included in freshmen reading lists nearly half a century later, even so called christian colleges, with the label on the door? I doubt it.
