…”First, we pray that we may not be tempted at all; and then, as a supplement to that pray, yielding the whole matter to divine wisdom, we pray, “But if it is necessary for our personal growth in grace, for the verification of our graces , and for God’s glory that we should be tempted, Lord, deliver us from evil, and especially deliver us from the personification of evil, the Evil One!”… (pg 560)

“The Devil Leaving” section: pgs. 560 – 564:

“… His will desires our total destruction, but his power is not equal to his will. God does not give him power such as he would like to possess… You are never so much in the hand of Stan that you are out of the hand of God. You are never so tempted, if you are a believer, that there is not a way of escape for you (1 Corinthians 10:13). God permits you to be tried for many reasons that perhaps you could not altogether understand but that His infinite wisdom understands for you. But He will not allow “the rod of the wicked” to “rest upon the lot of the righteous” (Psalm 125:3). It may fall there, but it will not stay there. The Lord may let you be put into the fire, but the fire will be heated not hotter than you are able to bear. “When the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him.”

“Ministering Angels” section: pgs. 564 – 568:

“Second, let us think of the angels ministering to the tempted One. The angels came and ministered to our Lord after Satan was gone. Notice that they did not come while our Lord was in the battle . Why not? Because it was necessary that He should tread the winepress alone (Isaiah 63:3), and because it was more glorious for Him to have no one with Him! Had there been any angels there to help him in the duel with the Adversary, they might have shared the honor of the victory. But they were stopped until the fight was over. When the Foe was gone, then the angels came. It has been noted that Scripture does not say that the angels came very often and ministered to Jesus. This makes me think that they were always near, that they hovered within earshot, watching and ready to interpose if they might. They were bodyguard around the Lord, even as they are today around His people. “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14)… Listen. You have been set free. There are many under bondage to Satan – not free as you are – fighting against him, but still his willing slaves. Oh, come my brother, God has set you free, so go after them! Go after the fallen woman and the drunken man. God, seek, and find the most debauched, the most depraved. Especially look after any of your own household who have played the prodigal. Oh, come let us go and find them! In the paths of death they roam: At the close of the day “Twill be sweet to say, “I have brought some lost one home.” And it will be right to say it, if the Lord has dealt so well with you.”

“Spurgeon’s Exposition of Luke 4: 1-16” – pgs. 571-575, the end of the book. Comment: This is the entire section of “The Temptation of Christ.”:

“… And Jesus answered him, “It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” (vs. 8)… “And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.” After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time. Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread throughout the entire vicinity. He was teaching in their synagogues, being acclaimed by everyone.” (vs. 12 – 15)

“He became popular. The people resorted to Him and were glad to hear Him. He who has had secret temptation and private conflict is prepared to bear open success without being elevated by it. Have you stood toe to toe with Satan? You will think little of the applause or of the attacked of your fellowman.”

It used to be that you could simoultaneously filter on this book and search say the ISBN number or even a portion of the title to get only the posts from this book.
