09/02/2020 – Day 094 – Samuel 1 -4 – David and Jonathan -“loved each other as their own soul”
I look forward to meeting David and Jonathan at the gates. Jonathan was loyal to David to the end but he fought and died with his father Saul in a futile battle with the Philistines. And his father was constantly trying to kill David.
To draw a secular movie scene example: The movie “Tombstone” with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. Doc is asked immediately after a gun battle where he fought courageously with the Wyatt against an evil outlaw gang: “Why do you do this Doc?” To which Doc quickly and succintly replies:
“Wyatt is my friend”. The inquisator then retorts: “Hell, I have alot of friends!; which Doc counters with the finale: “I don’t!”
I love these quotes from David the shepherd in his face off with Goliath :
First , to the Army of Israel, the shepherd boy proclaimed: “For whom is this uncircumcised Philistine; that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
And then to Goliath, just before he was to meet his fate at the hand of the shepherd boy with a sling shot and no armor: “Then all the assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.”
Once again, we see where the bible notes that even in the midst of his worst moments, David “had a heart for God.” And with Goliath, he certainly lived by what Jesus said a millenium later: “Do not be afraid of those who can only kill the body.”
