04/12/2022 – Day 044 – Genesis 24 – 27 / Did Rebekkah ever share with Isaac that the Lord told her before the birth of Esau and Jacob: “the older will serve the younger”? (25:23)
An article that I had referenced in my post of 7/14/2020 notes that certainly Rebekkah had shared that the Lord proclaimed to her that Jacob would receive the birthright over Esau. But, if that is so, why did she connive to trick Isaac so that Jacob could receive the blessing, with Esau thinking that he was blessing Esau? Had Esau refused to believe prior to this point?
The article distinguished between the birthright and the blessing:
Birthright: By tradition, the eldest son, establishing that the eldest would rule over the other brothers.
Blessings: Double the inheritance , of the other brother(s).
The article that I read said Esau had already given up the birthright, recognizing the blessing was more important. I disagree. I would have to read more to confirm that the two do not intersect one another.
Funny, in 27:36: Esau whines: “… He took my birthright, and now he’s taken my blessing!” Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?” Esau is lying, he gave away his birthright by his own choice. It is a suicidal toxin to oneself to blame others for our own choices.
Soli Deo Gloria!
