03/24/2023 – Gospel of John Fellowship – Chapter Eight // Quo Vadis?, translated: “Where are you going?”

I just happen to be gazing at my King James Bible, but if we look across the categories that I have for this reading: “Jesus Forgives an Adulterous Woman” – (vv 1 -22); “Jesus Speaks for the Father” – (vv 23 – 30); “Abraham’s Seed” (vv. 31-43); “The Devil’s Children” (vv 44-47)

Can we not start with a black and white Truth by way of the law of non-contradiction: We either give our life to our Lord, the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit, or we give it over to Satan.

Here is the link to Matthew Henry’s commentary on Chapter eight:

In particular, I would encourage y’all to read the scripture references: Exodus 14:13 and Revelation 13:8. What is it all about? Creation / Fall / Redemption. To use, the Latin: Quo Vadis?, or, Where are you going? How is it possible that anyone could go through life without seriously considering this question?

In the first section, with respect to the crowd that was testing Jesus using the life of the woman, They are blind for they do not see the grand finale of “Redemption” by God’s grace.

A question for the group: Would we conclude that Jesus is saying that the law doesn’t apply anymore since he has come to make everything right?

Let’s look at Matthew 5: 17 – 20: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in now wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosover therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that except your. righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

So, we all face judgment. If I do not accept Christ as Lord, I will be judged by the law, which requires perfection for God’s essence, unfathomable Holiness, does not allow co-existence with evil. The woman has experienced His grace with a parting admonition: “Neither do I condemn thee: Go and sin no more.” (vv 8:11)

Soli Deo Gloria!
