Live recording of “The Mission (Gabriel’s Oboe)” performed by Munchen Radio Orchestra under the direction of Morricone, the composer.
In retirement, I told Nancy , in a recurring bout of “ideaphoria”, that I wanted to start a Christian men’s study group akin to C.S. Lewis’ and J.R. Tokien’s “Inklings” group. Her reply: “Good luck with that one Jimmy!” Well, here is an example where such a group might have a short but insightful study around the move : “The Mission”. Be it a classical book or a movie, you bring a well grounded Christian worldview into the study in the hopes of nurturing the continual growth process.

“The Mission” is a 1986 award winning film including: Cannes Film Festival Academy Award for Cinematography and Golden Globe winning historical drama that tackled a little-known subject: the plight of South American natives living on the border between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil in the 1750s, and the efforts of Jesuit missionaries to protect these indigenous people from being enslaved by Spanish and Portuguese colonizers. Jeremy Irons plays Father Gabriel, the idealistic leader of a Jesuit mission, and Robert DeNiro plays Rodrigo Mendoza, a Spanish slave trader who renounces his profession and becomes a Jesuit himself.
Great story line about faith, repentence squared off against cultural attitudes, betrayal, hate, vengeance. Some heavy hitting actors in this one; Bob Deniro, Aidan Quinn, Liam Neeson , and Jeremy Irons.
