02/18/2021 – Day 277 – 118:22: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.”
It goes on in 23:24: “This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
In Matthew 21:42 , Jesus quotes 118:22 verbatim to the chief priests and the elders with a preliminary clause: “Have you never read in the Scriptures:….” This verse is also referred to in Mark 12:10 ; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; and 1 Peter 2: 4,7.
Psalm 118 is a regular part of Jewish, Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant liturgies. I shared with y’all that Psalm 145 is the longest of my memory verses: “The Love and Majesty of God”. But this would be a great choice as well. It would be great to recite in a prison cell if we end up like Paul.
He conquered death, his own and ours to by His grace alone! An amazing prophetic call one thousand years before its time. And all the more amazing in that the Jewish people, true to basic human nature, looked for the conquering hero Messiah, not the suffering servant that laid His life down so that we could live.
Here is John Gill’s commentary on just this single verse:
