Unfooling Yourself

Friday, April 10, 2026

“You may have experienced this phenomenon – you see a photograph of yourself and you think, “Is that me? I look fat, old, out of shape, or not what I think I look like.” And yet you look in the mirror every day and you don’t have that experience of shock. Why is that? The reason is this – when you look into a mirror you have built-in filters; your brain has its own photoshop. You know it’s you and so your mind is prepared. But when you see a photo, your mind isn’t prepared. You don’t know what you’re going to see. What does this tell us? We’re really good at fooling ourselves. Thus, 2 Corinthians 13:5 says, “Examine yourself to see if you’re in the faith.” Take a good honest look at your life. Don’t fool yourself. Are you closer to the Lord now than you were last year? Where are you going to be 10 years from now if you keep going the way you are now? Be honest. See yourself as you really are – and you’ll be able to make the changes you need to make.”
