I was introduced to Nanci’s music through my Nancy early on. I am attaching the obituary link above for those of you who may not be familiar with her story or her music. The link below is to a performance of “Love at the Five and Dime” at Austin City Limits years ago, a song that “exemplifies her style of musical storytelling with a literary flavour.”
I am also enclosing her duet performance with John Prine of “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness”, seeing as how we said goodbye to John this past year as well. Nanci credited John with being one of her early mentors.
Enjoy. Blessings!
Nancy Griffith tribute : “Love at the Five and Dime”
p.s. note to this song: Funny , how storytelling in music enriches personal memories. I never met her Dad Cooper, who died of cancer a little over a year before we met. Separated by a few years, we worked just a block away from each other on Walker Street in Houston. So , we both passed by the Woolworth’s street off of Main. But Cooper unlike me, ate lunch there at the counter, the $ 3 special. A true Scot he was: He would tell friends: “Let’s go eat lunch at the country club!”
