It wasn’t Abner Doubleday, who may or may not have been the messenger. Therefore, as much as we love the game and the Astros, it is not an idol for us.

The link: Yordan Alvarez capping a game long comeback for the Astros against the Mariners in game 1 of the playoffs with a last out 3 run walkout homer, two runs down. As a fan, it is easier to get excited about his teammates mobbing him at homeplate. But think of it, even in Yordan’s shoes, it is a relative very weak metaphor for what heaven is going to be like for us at the gate. I’m thinking of not only promises in Scripture, but Randy Alcorn’s book: “Heaven”. By definition, it will be unfathomable and “be too good to be true”, even for a mature Christian, in a flash after his last breath here.

Soli Deo Gloria!

p.s. – If you want to play this video of the walk off, you may have to do a cut and paste of the link here to a new tab on your browser , in order to get it to run.

p.s.s. – Lenny: I did get to see it after all, because I heard a happy scream from Nancy in the 8th when Bregman hit a 2 run homer to bring it to within two runs going into the 9th, the point of this walk off. I’m glad I was a slug and forgot about my “critical” task at hand to watch the end.
