03/03/2023 – Bible commentaries: Favorites for my quoted excerpts on posts.

  • The Matthew Henry Commentary – Copyright 1961 by Zondervan Publishing House; Grand Rapids, MI. Sorry, I don’t even have an ISBN reference on this one. This 1,986 commentary came to me by way of my wife’s maternal grandfather, Harvey Dozier. Harvey has notes throughout, all of them underlined by a ruler. If you are ok with summarized chapter commentary versions, here is a free website link:

  • Halley’s Bible Handbook – 23rd edition, Copyright @ 1962 by Henry H. Halley / Zondervan Publishing House; Grand Rapids, MI. I will share with you what is on the title page: “The Most Important Page in This Book is 814.” Here is the title to the page: “THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THIS BOOK IS This Simple Suggestion: THAT EACH CHURH HAVE A CONGREGATIONAL PLAN OF BIBLE READING and THAT THE PASTOR’S SERMON BE FROM THE PART OF THE BIBLE READ THE PAST WEEK // Thus connecting The Pastor’s Preaching with the People’s Bible Reading. (note between us: Yes, I find warrior messenger Henry’s over-capitalization annoying at times, but it is all about substance over form in my mind.).
  • William Barclay – The Daily Bible Series: ISBN 0-664-24104-2 (V. 1) – looking at my Gospel of John – Volume I book. Copyright @ 1975 – Westminster Press @ Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These books are color codes for biblical genre. As as young child, I vividly recall them all being lined up on one shelf of the bookcase to our entry way door.
  • John Gill commentary: Pastor Gill has a commentary for every single verse in the entire Bible. How he accomplished this while being an active preacher in England, I do not know. This is free on this link:

And, here is a bio for John Gill, the messenger:

  • “A Puritan Theology – Doctrine For Life” by Joel R. Beeke & Mark Jones / Copyright @ 2012 – Reformation Heritage Books – Grand Rapids, MI / ISBN 978-1-60178-166-6. //

One of my all-time favorites Christmas presents from my bride, this one runs just under 1,000 pages.

And Bibles that I draw upon excerpted verse footnotes:

  • The Apologetics Study Bible / Holman Bible Publishers; Nashville, TN // ISBN: 978-1-58640-024-8 copyright @ 2007.
  • The Evidence Bible – New King James Version / Bridge-Logos Publishers Copyright @ 2011 / ISBN # 978-0-88270-525-5

Soli Deo Gloria!
