12/07/2020 – Day 204 – Luke 23 – 24 // Thankfully, the Disciples Eyes were Opened by the Holy Spirit

Check me on this but Jesus meeting the two men on the road to Emmaus may only be covered in Luke. (on a parallel review -there is a fair amount of parallel between Matthew, Mark & Luke of the Synoptic Gospels, if not so much The Gospel of John.

The story covers Chapter 24: verses 13 – 35. Jesus calls out the two men for being foolish for not recognizing the son of God was a redeemer through suffering and death. And resurrection was the victory over death for all of us. I’ll pick it up here with a portion of Matthew Henry’s commentary on these verses:

“First, their slowness to believe. Christ tells us that those are fools who are slow of heart to believe, and are kept from it by prejudices never impartially examined. Secondly, Their slowness to believe the writing of the prophets. Were we but more conversant with the scripture, and the divine counsels as far as they are made known in the scripture, we would not be subject to such perplexities as we often entangle ourselves in…..

The Messiah ought to suffer these things; and therfore his sufferings were not only no objection against His being the Messiah, but really a proof of it. He could not be a Saviour, if he had not been a sufferer. Secondly, That when he had suffered these things, he should enter into His glory, which he did at His resurrection. It is called His glory, and it was the glory he had before the world was. He ought to suffer first, and then to enter His glory. We are directed to expect the crown of thorns and then that of glory.”

Soli Deo Gloria!
