When we use Google Maps and Apple Maps we are ultimately sharing personal data with “big brother”. They know where we are going, can derive our home and work and more. Some people use “Waze” instead thinking that that would alleviate the problem. However, since Google bought Waze in 2013, even when using Waze you are sharing data with Google indirectly.

So what are we to do. Well, one option would be to use a GPS navigation device like TomTom in your car for navigation purposes. But, who wants to buy another device, keep it updated, etc. So instead I checked online to see what other navigation apps are available. So far, I’ve started using Here WeGo. It seems to have a reasonable size user community so it has features like traffic congestion and the like. But from what I can tell is not connected to Google nor Apple, so keeps the data more private than the others. It appears they are following the GDPR globally as well.

My initial usage of Here WeGo seems promising. I’ll keep using it and see how it goes! You can also access Here WeGo from your computer to lookup directions. You can also find Here WeGo in Google Play and the Apple Store.
