Victor Davis Hanson Interview: The Korean War and Matthew Ridgeway // Book: “The Savior Generals” by VDH

I always enjoy listening to VDH’s historical insights, as they lead into “How then shall we live today as Christian warriors in our time.”, that is more where I take it as an effective tool. Matthew is not our savior, but he is a God given messenger I believe, an exemplary, “contrarian”, a servant driven leadership example for us all. He chose not to follow the “world”. I would like to get back to this, perhaps a short discussion group on this blog by this coming summer.

btw: The five historical mentor generals that Victor covers in “The Savior Generals” are:

Themistoches (480 B.C.); Belisamus (529 – 559) ; Sherman (1864); Ridgway (1895 – 1993); Petraeus (2007 – 2008)

Who am I to take issue with VDH, particularly before having I read VDH’s premise for the common mentoring characteristics of these five leaders over a span of nearly 2500 years. But, I would replace Belisamus; Sherman and Petraeus with Charles Martel (Battle of Tours – 8th century Western Europe); Grant; and General Hal Moore (see 1965 Vietnam – Battle of Ira Drang Valley – “We Were Soldiers” – book – 1992 / movie – 2002). Funny, Sherman and Grant served together side-by-side for awhile, and were brothers that helped one another.

Even if it were just for “fun”, I would much rather have listened to this interview than to watch the Super Bowl, in one-third of the time I might add. But I can’t use that, as I would not watch the Super Bowl under any circumstances. haha. Given all my reading over the years, God forbid that I don’t know alot more history than a vast majority of my peers. But I learned a lot in just this 50 minutes.

Soli Deo Gloria!
