The German Dichotomy

Friday, November 7, 2025

Before WWII, much of German culture, politics, and religious life held an underlying belief that there were two spheres of life – the religious and the secular. And that each sphere did not affect the other one. Holiness was something that related entirely to the spiritual realm – and not the realm of this world. Faith had to do with religion and not the rest of life – certainly not the political realm. The result of all this was when Hitler rose to power, much of the church just gave in or didn’t see that it was its job to oppose him. We often do the same thing with our lives – we keep the two realms separate – there’s the realm of our faith – and then there’s the realm of real life. But the Bible never speaks of a religious realm and a secular realm. For if the Lord is not Lord of all – then He’s not Lord at all. So don’t let there be any such wall of separation. There is no religious or secular realm of your life. For the Lord your God is Lord of all.

Soli Deo Gloria!

Further in Jeremiah 32:

“They have placed their detestable things in the house that is called by My name and have defiled it. Thy have built the high places of Baal in the Valley of Hinnom to make their sons and daughters pass through the fire to Molech – something I had not commanded them. I had never entertained the thought that they do this detestable act causing Judah to sin!” (Jeremiah 32: 34 – 35)

Here is the footnote to 32:35 in the Apologetics Study Bible:

“Though the Lord ‘never entertained the thought’ that Judah’s leaders would introduce Baal worship and child sacrifice, this does not mean He had no foreknowledge of their detestable actions. The statement is a way of emphasizing that such practices were never part of His plan for Israel. God is too holy to contemplate condoning evil (Habbakuk 1:13; James 1:13)

Let’s take a look at Habbakuk 1:13:

In “Habbakkuk’s Second Prayer” , Habbakkuk reasons with Almighty God, questioning how he could tolerate such treacherery from the Chaldeans. As with Job, the LORD demonstrates His unfathomable patience and love. Read “God’s Second Answer” in 2: 2-5. The footnote to 2:4 reads: “The person who has true faith in God will remain faithful despite outward circumstances (3: 16-19), and the faithful person will not endure without faith in God (see Hebrews 2:4) The footnote finishes with: “Habakkuk’s statement should be viewed in light of earlier prophets who stressed that offering sacrifices according to the requirements of the law was useless when a genuine commitment to live according to God’s standards of justice and mercy was lacking.”

Finally, let’s reflect on James 1:13; I’m expanding it through verse 15:

“No one undergoing a trial should say, ‘I am being tempted by God.’ For God is not tempted by evil, and He himself doesn’t tempt anyone. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.”
