I have an example in my life:
When I started out in prison ministry around 25 years ago, I asked the old warriors to share their journey. The word that kept coming up over and over was “humbling”. At the end of my seven year tenure in “The Jester Units” of Sugarland, Texas, I had reached a point of “Amen brother”, beginning from a point of “What?”
The Lord tugged on my shoulder for six months to volunteer. Going through the gates the first time, I remember praying: “Ok Lord, you win, I will serve you through these people!” (note: more than lacking in humble). The Christian brother would line all up and give me hugs as I departed. And I remember a guard coming up to me in the later years and suggesting it was all a ruse to get an earlier parole.
On rare occasion, like when our baby daughter was sick, I had to miss those Wednesday nights at the prison. Towards the end of my tenure, I can honestly say, I drove away from that complex feeling like I was receiving far more than I was giving. That was quite a transformation from that first day!
